Santa Claus

Distant Roar Of Santa Claus

cold night
gory night
the wind is blowing
the police car siren is wailing
the moon is freezing
and crazed tumble weeds are fleeing
in all directions
in terror of Santa Claus's distant roar
Ho Ho Ho!

the salvation army bell
made in china
rings a dire warning in chinese
Ding Ding Ding!

the beginning with no end
you say your love for me is forever

the end with no beginning
I say my love for you is not forever
my love is not eternal
there is no beginning

On Reversal of Temporality of Human Cognition and Dialectical Self

Suchoon S. Mo, University of Southern Colorado
The Journal of Mind and Behavior , Winter 1990, Vol. 11, No. 1, Pages 37-46 ISSN 0271-0137

In terms of temporality of logic, the relation between "before" and "after" is an inverse relation, as is the relation between intension and extension. Reversal of temporality of human cognition is accompanied by corresponding reversal between intension and extension. Such reversal is based on lateral reversal of brain hemisphere locus of time information. A similar inverse relation exists between self as subject and self as object. Extreme objectification of self is associated with brain hemisphere lateral reversal of time information, indicating that subject-object reversal is similar in nature to reversal of temporality of cognition. Dialectical nature of self is based on contradiction between self as subject and self as object. Synthesis arising from such contradiction may be regarded as reality of self.

Seek And You Shall Find

Seek And You Shall Find

A Zen master is sick. He is dying. A young disciple approaches him.

Disciple: Before you die, please answer my question.
Master: What is it?
Disciple: What is the meaning of life?
Master; Life is like a river.

The disciple retreats to his chamber and contemplates. Next day, he approaches the master again.

Disciple: Master, I have contemplated on your answer all night long last night. But I still do not understand.
Master: You don't like my answer? All right, then. Life is not like a river.

The Zen master died.
Seek and your shall find

Freedom of Science

Freedom Is Not Free

As with literary magazines, more and more scientific journals are going online. Scientific researchers usually must bear the cost of publication which runs to hundreds and often thousands of dollars. When you submit a paper for publication, it goes through peer review process which may take a few months to a year or so. Then the e...ditor may request modification or re-write. By the time the paper is published, it may be obsolete. Then the cost of reading. A scientific journal is not cheap, and one cannot subscribe to only a few. Or one has to go to a libraray and hunt for any articile of interest. A researcher's time is quite precious, and he or she may as well send off a poorly paid assistant, usually foreigners on temporary visa, to the library on a thankless salvage mission. Or, just outsource the entire scientific research to foreign countries and go to Wall Street to gamble and make money. Online scientific journals are one reaction to this state of stupidity and insanity.

Will America maintain the cutting edge in science and technology. I don't think so. Freedom of speech. They say freedom is not free. Unfortunate.

alphabet

Japanese Alphabet Song

Although its scent still lingers on
the form of a flower has scattered away
For whom will the glory of this world remain unchanged?
Arriving today at the yonder side
of the deep mountains of evanescent existence
We shall never allow ourselves to drift away
intoxicated, in the world of shallow dreams.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroha

Japanese have 50 phonetic scripts. A Buddhist monk composed a verse in which each script occurs only once.

Every Japanese elementary school child knows this verse. No wonder it is so hard to christianize them.

They also have a beautiful "number song." A very effective device to teach pre-schoolers how to count.

The current uproar about the sad state of American math and science education may be the very cause of the educational problem facing America. Humanize math and science education. at earliest stage of development.

Solomon And Nansen

Solomon And Nansen

Solomon did not cut
a child in half
and they say he was wise

Nansen did cut
a cat in half
and they say he was wise

Solomon and Nansen
Near East and Far East
they shall never meet

Nansen saw the monks of the eastern and western halls fighting over a cat. He seized the cat and told the monks: 'If any of you say a good word, you can save the cat.'No one answered. So Nansen boldly cut the cat in two pieces.

That evening Joshu returned and Nansen told him about this. Joshu removed his sandals and, placing them on his head, walked out.

Nansen said: 'If you had been there, you could have saved the cat.'

Mumon's Comment: Why did Joshu put his sandals on his head? If anyone answers this question, he will understand exactly how Nansen enforced the edict. If not, he should watch his own head.

No Rain

No Rain

Rain in North Carolina? You are lucky. No rain here, in the brown scorched prairie. Hot. Dry. Jack rabbits are on rampage, doing war dance. They have joined Tea Party recently, and they are waving their proud ears. Nature is in Freudian anal fixation, and so is the national economy. As the sun goes down, the prime time erectile dysfunction serenades a horde of Homeric thirsty Greeks demonstrating with their tragic mouths wide open. No rain. No shit.

Poetry Of Maxwell's Demon

Poetry Of Maxwell's Demon

So-called "Maxwell's Demond" has been kicked around in physics, philosophy, engineering and pop literature for years. Yet, I have been unable to find any poet who is reckless en0ough to tackle with that elusive demon, although some fiction writers have been chasing that demon. Here is an over-view article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxwell%27s_demon

The fundamental problem is that one is tempted to prove that the second law of thermodynamics is false by assuming that it is true - a conventional method of asiomatic proof. As Russell says, there is no logical way of defining logic.

"Greenhouse Effect" is a consequence of the civilization based on technology of entropy. And search for "alternative energy" is in itself entropical. In terms of economics, consumption is entropical. The gate-keeper of that consumption is a Maxwell's Demon.

In An Abandoned Temple

I come here to pray
in an abandoned temple
seekers are long gone

the road stops here

no reason to look back

on a dusty stool

a fly is still and serene
a shaft of sun light

I sit by the fly

just two of us

the end of the long road

why am I holding a gun
aiming at nothing?

I seek no answer

there is no need

no end to turmoil

being awake in silence
stench of the temple

life and death are alike

soul is empty

a grave yard outside

flowers and grass are all dead
so are the tomb stones

here I am to stay

and rest

Women and Color

For most people, the retina contains 3 color receptors. But, for very few, there are 4 color receptors. Who are they? They are all women. What are the implications in terms of human evolution?

Wisdom of Fiddler Crab

Remove the dominant (larger, right) claw of a "right - handed" male fiddler crab. Then, it will grow a feeding (smaller) claw, and the left claw will become larger and dominant. A male fiddler crab fights and impresses females with the dominant claw. When a right- handed fiddler crab loses a fight, it becomes a left-handed fighter.

Are men like fiddler crabs, in some way or others? Why is human evolution so stubbornly right-handed?

Human Evolution of Choking on Food

Eating and Talking

Human evolution of language brought about the unwelcome consequence of choking on food while talking and eating at the same time. The primary function of mouth used to be that of eating. Now its primary function appears to be that of talking, to others or to one's self. So, eating and talking have become mutually antagonistic. Just imagine a performance poet reciting and eating fried chicken at the same time. Or, more metaphorically, reciting, gesturing, making face and eating Louisiana shrimp contaminated by BP oil spill, at the same time.

BP and Jesus

The Pelican

Legend has it that the pelican, a sea bird, gets angry with its young and killed them. It then so regrets its action that it tears its own breast with its beak, and its blood brings its young back to life. The pelican is seen to represent the sacrifice of Christ, whose blood is shed to so that all may participate in his risen life, and especially those who drink his blood (wine) in Communion.

Going Home

Going Home
Homage to Santoka

I danced with a girl
she had three legs and danced well
I was quite drunk then

when she goes to church
with the red shoes upon her head
a miracle will happen

she undresses
like an onion peeling itself
I have tears in my eyes

earth worms underground
are you happy there?

I spread my arms
she spreads her legs
martial art

saint valentine's day
two sparrows are not mating

my mind is empty
my bladder is full

oh I am sorry
you were playing a tuba
I didn't know

I can't eat bacon
the soprano is screaming
like a dying pig

so many lights on the street
I lost my shadow

the undertaker
he dumped the deceased in the pit
took the casket home

a frog came to the door
it was a jehovah's witness
reborn

in a dense fog
I drove past an abandoned house
it was my home

Anna Karenina and Privatization of Misery

"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Jared Diamond arrives at his principle of domestication of animals (Anna Karenina Principle) by alluding to what Tolstoy said in his "Anna Karenina." But Diamond may be ignoring a very existential core of what Tolstoy said. What Tolstoy is saying is the "delusion" of being uniquely alone or being "self" in one's misery. Pain is very uniquely personal. t is privatized. In a way, pain is "I." Happiness is not something to do with "I." The statement "I am happy" is rather superficial, because when one is happy, one does not worry about if he himself or someone else is happy.
Happiness is universal. Tolstoy is basically transplanting Buddhist existentialism into Christianity. Rightfully, therefore, he was excommunicated from the Orthdox Church. Suffering (unsatisfactoriness) is universal which is characterized by the delusion of personal suffering. Anna Karenina's misery is universal. The tragedy arises because of attributing such universality to uniquely personal self.

This way of looking at Anna Karenia opens a new perspective on current controvesry of health care reform.

Destiny And Destination

1.

it has expired

I used to have a theory
about something
or something else
it drifted away

I have no need of enlightenment
or awakening
or nirvana

wisdom is a fraud
once spoken or understood
or practiced

2.

or a stray woman
or a stray shadow
may follow me
my destiny
has no destination
my destination

3.

time is not what
time is when
now is now
now is just now
one day passes one day per day
one second passes one second per second
one day is just one day
one second is just one second
time is not speed limit

4.

I am here and now
that does make no difference
I am not here and not now
that does make no sense
ultimate truth is not true

tomorrow and yesterday
they may dance together
until today is gone
or will never come

5.

I am indifferent
to comedy or tragedy
life is neither a drama nor an opera
I have no need of stage

6.

I am real

Opera

such a great opera
Don Jose killed Carmen
many times

a soprano in cold shower
is she singing
or screaming?

everyone is going to an opera
I am going to a funeral
everyone will be moved and touched
so shall I
everybody will be clapping hands
so shall I

you are allowed to yell
bravo!
in an opera house
because she died singing
but you are not allowed to yell
bravo!
in a funeral home
just because she died singing

when the soprano sings an aria
do not sing along
because
her voice will climb to the high C note
sooner or later
and you can only croak
like a frog

in this silent holy night
three drunkards sing
a song of silent holy night

in an empty theater
the stage is set
for a mute tragedy
of chorus singers
who are mute
on the stage
