Grace and Resiliency

The great Russian writer Tolstoy once wrote, that all happy families are alike but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. In other words, one might say that one’s true character is indiscernible in happy times but in misery it shows itself quite clearly. In the recent calamity and tragedy which struck Japan, its people displayed their true character for the entire world to see. There has been no report of looting, arson, rape, homicide, stealing, assault and battery, civil disorder, mayhem, even bickering. They remained considerate of, and respectful to, each other, and polite, civil and graceful in such a horrible disaster. With such strength of character and resiliency, they will, I am sure, recover and rebuild their society. I salute them.
